Course Description
Become certified in Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) with this one-day, online training.
Mental health literacy (MHL) benefits individuals both professionally and personally, offering tools that apply across disciplines and daily life. This training focuses on MHL in professional and academic settings, providing participants with the skills to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults.Benefits and Learning Outcomes
- Identify common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges.
- Identify common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges.
- Explain how to support someone developing a mental health and/or substance use concern.
- Demonstrate effective strategies to support someone experiencing a mental health and/or substance use crisis.
- Apply appropriate communication techniques when interacting with a person in crisis.
- Connect individuals to appropriate professional, community or peer support resources.
- Analyze the impact of trauma and substance use on individuals and communities.
- Develop a personalized self-care plan that promotes resilience and well-being.
- Recall the steps of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE).
Notes
Total training time includes:
- Eight hours of live, virtual instruction (one full day)
- Two hours of mandatory online independent pre-work
- Thirty minutes of mandatory post-work (quiz/evaluation) for certification
Upon completion, this Mental Health First Aid certificate is valid for three years. Renewals are available online, or participants may retake the full class.
