Course Description

Gain an understanding of what defines an experience as traumatic and the effects of trauma on the brain, the body and emotions. Explore the distinctions between various mental health issues related to trauma, including post-trauma growth and resilience. Participants also receive self-care tools to help them recognize when working with trauma survivors is taking its toll.

This non-credit program benefits professionals in the mental health field and other service providers who want to better understand the effects of trauma and how to provide trauma-informed care.

Each week, participants receive readings and videos, and have assignments to responding to discussions online. This course is expected to take a total of 40 hours, with four hours of classwork each week.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

  • Gain an overview of the professional literature addressing traumatic events among various populations, describing risk factors, vulnerability and effects
  • Define what makes an experience traumatic and the causes, responses and long-term effects of trauma on physical and emotional health
  • Be introduced to the neurobiological process of traumatic reaction, including the impact of traumatic experience on development, memory, learning, attachment, social skills, relationship and intimacy
  • Evaluate Post Traumatic Growth and resilience and its role in healing
  • Increase your ability to identify the effects of working with trauma survivors on yourself, supporters, practitioners and clinicians
  • Recognize the cultural and diversity issues that may affect all of the above

Access to Course Site
Look for an email approximately one week prior to the start date of the class with instructions on setting up your username and password and how to access the online course site.

Course Requirements
This is an instructor-facilitated, online asynchronous course. You are required to have routine access to a computer with Internet (we highly recommend a high-speed connection such as DSL or cable modem). You are also required to have a recent version of Microsoft Office Suite or comparable program to include Microsoft Word (word processing), Excel (spreadsheets), and PowerPoint (presentations) in order to both view and create documents needed to participate in this course.

Expectations
Each week you receive readings and assignments to complete. Each week you are expected to log in and complete assignments within the deadlines given in order to be awarded CEUs and the certificate of completion. However, within the deadline you can complete the readings and assignments at your leisure.

Completion
Certificates of Completion are mailed within two weeks after the last day of class.

*Earn a UWM School of Continuing Education certificate in Trauma Counseling by completing Trauma Counseling I and II in as little as 18 months (not to exceed three years). Upon successful completion, you are eligible to apply for certification as a Certified Trauma Services Specialist (CTSS) or Certified Trauma Responder (CTR) with the Association of Traumatic Stress Specialists (ATSS). Please go to ATSS website to get a complete list of the requirements needed to become certified. https://www.atss.info/index.php/certification

Nurses, social workers, therapists, staff at shelters, youth workers, HR professionals, medical administrative and support staff, occupational therapists, teachers, school staff, emergency responders, first responders, community advocates, chaplains, police and corrections personnel. Any individual who supports and engages with individuals who have experienced trauma. Any individual who is dedicated to expanding their knowledge as it relates to trauma.

Patricia Clason, RCC, CPS, has more than 40 years of experience in continuing education, offering programs in the areas of ethics, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence and leadership. A professional speaker, trainer, coach and peer specialist, Patricia also leads weekend retreats for military veterans, Healing Warrior Hearts and Renewal for sexual abuse survivors since 1993. In addition, she has led over 500 EQ intensive weekends Taking It Lightly since 1983, as well as teaching EQ classes in universities and corporations. Patricia teaches multiple programs for UWM's School of Continuing Education, including the Trauma Counseling Certificate Program with Rae Anne Ho Fung, Ph.D., and classes for Business Administration and Communication, Human Services and Non-Profit Education.

Rae Anne Ho Fung, PhD, Executive Director of Clinical Integration at Rogers Behavioral Health, is a licensed psychologist and Army Veteran who specializes in the use of evidence-based interventions in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and co-morbid conditions.

Dr. Ho Fung’s interest in trauma psychology emerged from her time as an urban teacher and as a combat veteran. Since then, she has spent the last decade delving deep into the world of trauma psychology and has treated Veteran and civilian survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault, physical abuse, community violence, combat and motor vehicle and industrial accidents. Dr. Ho Fung developed the Adolescent Trauma Recovery Program at Rogers Behavioral Health and before moving into an operations role, supervised in the Adult Trauma Recovery and Mental Health and Addiction Recovery partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs.

Currently, Dr. Ho Fung is responsible for clinical quality, fiscal responsibility and operational oversight of Rogers Behavioral Health’s three largest clinics with approximately 150 employees, serving 450 patients at the partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient levels of care. She is committed to equity and diversity which includes increasing access to care for underserved populations through the creation of novel programs, including the newly develop serious and persistent mental illness intensive outpatient program, as well as collaborating with the community to increase services for military, veterans, and their families.

In addition to her work at Rogers, Dr. Ho Fung co-developed and facilitates trauma counseling courses through the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee’s School of Continuing Education. She is also a member of SE Wisconsin’s Veteran Suicide Prevention Taskforce.

The continuing education unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized means to document participation in organized non-credit continuing education. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in organized continuing education under qualified instruction. The CEU provides a vehicle for employers, professional groups, and licensing agencies to account for participation in non-credit seminars, workshops, and courses.

Privacy Policy


Cancellation Policy

To cancel, log into your student portal, go to "Enrollment History," and select "Request Drop" next to the course. Refund eligibility depends on notice, course type, and fee:

  • 30+ days prior to start of course: Full refund.
  • 15-29 days prior to start of course: Refund minus a 25% administrative fee.
  • Less than 15 days prior to start of course: No refund.

Exceptions (No Refunds):

  • Osher Educational Travel/Go Explore and College for Kids & Teens courses.
  • Courses with a fee of $35 or less.
  • On-demand online courses after the student has accessed the learning environment.
  • Conferences/Special Events (specific policy will be in registration terms).
  • Special requests and non-course fee items (e.g., memberships, textbooks) are non-refundable.

If the School of Continuing Education cancels a course, a full refund will be issued.


Invoicing Policy

  • If "invoice full amount" is selected, payment is due 14 days before the course start.
  • Failure to pay by the due date may result in cancellation of your registration.
  • For Agency payments (AmeriCorps, DVR, MyCAA, etc.), contact sceinfo@uwm.edu for next steps.
  • Automated payment reminders will be sent until the balance is paid.

Third Party Expenses

The School of Continuing Education does not provide refunds for any expenses (such as travel, accommodations, or materials) incurred by students due to a course cancellation or a student's self-cancellation. We strongly recommend booking refundable/transferable travel and accommodations, and purchasing materials with a return window extending beyond the course start date.


Collections Policy

Participants who fail to make timely payments agree to pay all collection costs incurred by UWM (agency fees, legal fees, etc.) and any late fees. UWM may also certify the past-due balance to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and claim the total due against any refunds or payments owed to the participant.


Photography and Media Usage

The School of Continuing Education may take photographs, video, and other media during courses and events for educational, promotional, and advertising purposes. Virtual programs may be recorded for marketing and content sharing.


Conduct Information and Disciplinary Measures

No firearms or weapons are allowed on UWM property.

Participant conduct policies are based on the following UW System Administrative Codes, which may result in probation, suspension, or dismissal from all UWM functions:
