Course Description

This course is open to Certified Lymphedema Therapists who have completed a minimum of 62 hours of prior lymphedema education. This course is designed for certified lymphedema therapists who want to acquire more in-depth knowledge in specific treatment areas, increase “hands on skills” in these areas, and learn additional treatment skills through group discussions.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

  • Explain how the fascial system restricts the lymphatic flow after injury or surgery
  • Palpate the rhythm of the fascial tissues
  • Release restrictions in the fascial system
  • Identify soft tissue techniques for manual lymph drainage
  • Explain the use of thermograms and naturopathic tests to monitor progress
  • Identify methods of delivering complete decongestive therapy (CDT) to ensure versatility and best practice lymphedema care
  • Discuss the major issues, concerns, and contraindications with treating edema in the bariatric population
  • Develop clinical reasoning skills and implement treatment methods required in treating the bariatric population that extend beyond the traditional approach to the treatment of lymphedema and venous edema
  • Recognize basic venous and arterial physiology and pathophysiology and its relevance in the treatment of lymphedema
  • Describe the methodology used in obtaining the anklebrachial index (ABI) and its relevance with regard to wound healing and lower extremity compression
  • Differentiate between clinical signs of venous and arterial disease
  • Discuss internal and external factors which affect edema management
  • Discuss best practice treatment options for lower extremity edema with or without wounds due to orthopedic, trauma, surgical, venous insufficiency, etc.
  • Discuss microsurgery for lymphedema

Notes

Please bring shorts and a t-shirt or tank top for lab. It is recommended to dress in layers, as the room may be cold during lectures. Participants should bring a box of washable markers. Participants should also bring 2 flat sheets and 1pillow case.

Prerequisites

Certified Lymphedema Therapist who has completed a minimum of 62 hours of prior lymphedema education.

Mike Bond, MS, PT, CLT, CIDN

Mike Bond, MS, PT, CLT, CIDN, DN2 has been a physical therapist since 1997. He graduated from University of the Pacific (UOP) PT school and has a background in headache pain management, dry needling, manual therapy, soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release (MFR), and elastic taping methods. He has often said his favorite patients to treat are the ones everyone else has given up on. He became a CLT in 2007 with many years’ experience in practice and supervision of other CLTs in a variety of settings. He has worked in a variety of settings, currently working for a home health agency while operating a private cash based holistic physical therapy practice. He believes strongly in the body’s power to heal itself and believes our greatest gift is having the knowledge of how to help the body’s physiology work more efficiently and effectively to use access the healing power. He has worked as a staff therapist and a director of therapy in a variety of settings and has a broad knowledge base of those practice settings. He has experience with many therapists trained in different lymphedema and dry needling programs and very much enjoys exchanging knowledge and training to understand the basic / founding principles they have in common to bring about unity of practice despite background training. He relies on his deep understanding of anatomy and physiology related to numerous disorders and how they can interact with and impact the client. He also understands the perspective of many who attend this program due to his experience in a variety of practice settings. He is very active in treating, consulting, and teaching about lymphedema and dry needling wherever and whenever he finds a place for it. He joined the staff at UW-Milwaukee in November 2012 teaching the Comprehensive Lymphedema and Venous Edema Management course and Lymphedema II: The Next Level and Lymphedema: Module III. He has developed CE courses in Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Dry Needling, Deep Tissue Massage for Healing and Fascial Release among others. He is invested in this education due to both personal and professional reasons.

The continuing education unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized means to document participation in organized non-credit continuing education. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in organized continuing education under qualified instruction. Privacy Policy

Cancellation Policy

To cancel, log into your student portal, go to "Enrollment History," and select "Request Drop" next to the course. Refund eligibility depends on notice, course type, and fee:

  • 30+ days prior to start of course: Full refund.
  • 15-29 days prior to start of course: Refund minus a 25% administrative fee.
  • Less than 15 days prior to start of course: No refund.

Exceptions (No Refunds):

  • Osher Educational Travel/Go Explore and College for Kids & Teens courses.
  • Courses with a fee of $35 or less.
  • On-demand online courses after the student has accessed the learning environment.
  • Conferences/Special Events (specific policy will be in registration terms).
  • Special requests and non-course fee items (e.g., memberships, textbooks) are non-refundable.

If the School of Continuing Education cancels a course, a full refund will be issued.

Invoicing Policy

  • If "invoice full amount" is selected, payment is due 14 days before the course start.
  • Failure to pay by the due date may result in cancellation of your registration.
  • For Agency payments (AmeriCorps, DVR, MyCAA, etc.), contact sceinfo@uwm.edu for next steps.
  • Automated payment reminders will be sent until the balance is paid.

Third Party Expenses

The School of Continuing Education does not provide refunds for any expenses (such as travel, accommodations, or materials) incurred by students due to a course cancellation or a student's self-cancellation. We strongly recommend booking refundable/transferable travel and accommodations, and purchasing materials with a return window extending beyond the course start date.

Collections Policy

Participants who fail to make timely payments agree to pay all collection costs incurred by UWM (agency fees, legal fees, etc.) and any late fees. UWM may also certify the past-due balance to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and claim the total due against any refunds or payments owed to the participant.

Photography and Media Usage

The School of Continuing Education may take photographs, video, and other media during courses and events for educational, promotional, and advertising purposes. Virtual programs may be recorded for marketing and content sharing.

No firearms or weapons are allowed on UWM property.

Participant conduct policies are based on the following UW System Administrative Codes, which may result in probation, suspension, or dismissal from all UWM functions:
