HLSC 0010 - Lymphedema I: Comprehensive Lymphedema and Venous Edema Management
Course Description
This introductory course is designed to teach therapists like you the necessary skills and knowledge to safely and effectively administer treatment to patients suffering with the chronic condition of lymphedema.
Topics covered in Lymphedema I include:

Complete decongestive therapy (CDT)

Manual lymph drainage (MLD) techniques
-
Compression bandaging
-
Skin care for lymphedema patients
-
Appropriate exercises for lymphedema patients
During the course, European lymphedema and soft tissue mobilization methods are combined with practical, clinically focused treatments to deliver results in managed care.
Upon completion of this six-day course, you will be awarded 62 continuing education hours (6.2 CEUs), a certificate of completion and the credentials for certified lymphedema therapist (CLT).*
An additional 18 hours (1.8 CEUs) may be earned by completing more coursework at home.

What Makes this Lymphedema I Program Unique?

It’s taught by an experienced therapist using an integrated, practical approach that is recognized by the American reimbursement system.

It includes critical problem-solving related to co-morbidities.

One-third of the course is devoted to lymphatic system anatomy and physiology.

One-third is devoted to theory and practice of manual lymphatic treatment and bandaging skills.

One-third is devoted to exercise, skin care, patient evaluation/assessment, pneumatic pumps, compression garments, patient self-management and clinic set-up topics such as insurance (codes, forms, etc.), marketing, support groups and equipment.

Lab time is hands-on, and mentoring is integrated into all sections equally (accounting for 2/3 of class time).
Benefits and Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate familiarity with pathology of both lymphedema and venous edema

Demonstrate introductory taping, MFR and scar management

Evaluate and individualize treatment programs for subacute lower extremity orthopedic edema and lymphedema from venous insufficiency

Create a patient self-management, measurement and precaution program
-
Evaluate and establish a plan of care (POC) for a patient

Develop and implement one-hour, therapist-intensive treatment sessions with outcomes equal to or better than two- to three-hour therapist intensive treatment sessions

Apply hands-on experience working with a minimum of five unique patients in various stages and types of lymphedema and/or venous wound edema

Demonstrate the four pillars of lymphedema treatment: Manual lymphatic treatment (MLT), low stretch bandaging, exercise/self-management and skin care

Discuss interdisciplinary treatment provided by cancer specialists for breast and prostate cancer and its effects on lymphedema patients

Discuss anatomy and physiology related to the lymphatic and venous system
Certification Requirements:
To earn the certified lymphedema therapist (CLT) credential, you must complete the full 62-hour course, finish all evening writing assignments and pass a clinical competency test on the final day. The test consists of evaluating, treating and performing manual lymphatic treatment and bandaging on a patient.
Additional Training Hours:
An additional 18 hours (1.8 CEUs) will be awarded to those who complete more coursework at home, bringing the course total to 80 hours. To earn the full 135 hours required to apply for the Lymphedema Association of North America (LANA) certification exam, consider enrolling in our Lymphedema Certificate program.
