Course Description

Ethics is more than following the law. Its about knowing your values and principles and the skills involved in making decisions that go beyond compliance.

Ethical Types determine our predispositions in the decision-making process. Identify your ethical type and be more aware of how it influences your perspectives. You will also learn about processes for making thoughtful ethical determinations and apply them to a case study.

This course requires interactive participation, including discussion posts, over a one-month period.

Instructor-led content meets the minimum requirement in the areas of professional conduct and ethics, and satisfies your biennial registration period requirement per Chapter A-E 13.

Objectives:

  • Explore ethical types and how they influence decision-making in ethical dilemma situations within the engineering profession
  • Learn approaches for making the best possible ethical decisions while including the laws, regulations and codes that must be followed in engineering
  • Apply an approach to a case study within your specific engineering area

Course Outline/Topics

Module 1 – Identify Ethical Types and how they affect decision-making with respect to engineering ethics (codes of conduct, laws and regulations) and compliance.
Read articles defining ethical types. Post your thoughts on the Ethical Types and their effect on decision-making, include your ethical type and how you believe it does or does not affect your decision-making. Comment on two classmates’ posts.

Module 2 – Applying Ethical Decision-Making Models and Ethical Types to a Specific Case Study

  • Read articles on the Six Approaches to Ethical Decision-Making — The Utilitarian Approach, The Rights Approach, The Fairness Approach, The Common Good Approach, The Virtue Approach, The Care Ethics Approach.
  • Choose a case study from options provided for different types of engineering. Submit post outlining your process for resolving the case study. Read two other classmates’ posts and comment on their approach..
