Course Description

This course is designed to accommodate participants who are new to the electric power industry.

This course describes how to utilize information from a variety of sources to create control elementary diagrams for high voltage circuit breakers. Participants will use cut sheets provided by panel, protective relay, control switch, and circuit breaker manufacturers to develop a control elementary diagram that illustrates trip and close circuits for a 138 KV circuit breaker.

Participants will then use information derived from panel wiring details, etc., which will result in a control elementary drawing. This will include contact designations, cable designations, conductor terminations, etc., needed to perform substation acceptance tests.

Course Outline/Topics

Day 1

After discussing sample drawings, reference documents, and “industry best” work practices, participants use a scope of work document to develop the following drawings:

· Material list

· Control elementary diagram

· Control panel front view

· Control panel rear view with wiring details

· Control panel cable terminations

· 138 KV circuit breaker low voltage cable terminations

· Control cable schedule

Day 2

Participants create a drawing list, then exchange drawings to compare and peer-review work products. Participants perform operations, maintenance, and constructability reviews to assure that final products effectively present essential details.

Note: Substation drawings are custom products that reflect the preference of the individual who prepared the drawings. Participants are given copies of preliminary drawings that include 20% of the essential details and sample copies of similar drawings. Participants use preliminary drawings to create IFC (Issued for Construction) drawings that are peer reviewed for accuracy and completeness.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this course, participants will comprehend wiring details that are shown on control elementary diagrams. This includes device and terminal designations, component representations on panel front and rear views, terminal block arrangements, test switch applications, control cable applications, and wiring essentials.

Project managers, construction managers, engineers, planners, supervisors, designers, technicians, analysts, consultants, electricians, and others who need to utilize wiring drawings as part of their assigned duties.

Mr. Sleva is President of Prescient Transmission Systems, a consulting company that focuses on innovations that are needed as energy production migrates to carbon free, renewable energy. He is involved with 1.) directing the development of new products and services that can be used to prevent blackouts in the United States and across the globe, 2.) introducing best practices used in other industries to the electric utility industry, and 3.) introducing innovative ideas that optimize cohesive utilization of disparate technologies.

 

During his career, he has designed electrical systems for nuclear generating stations; designed substations; provided technical support to power dispatchers, system operators and plant operators; developed technical training programs for engineers, technicians, drafters, designers, system operators and technical clerks; participated in forensic investigations related to transformer failures, motor failures, cable failures, relay failures and circuit breaker failures; participated in the development of national standards for IEEE and NERC; and served as a subject matter expert introducing innovative approaches to prevention of wildfire ignition by electric power lines.

 

Tony is a Life Senior Member of IEEE and a registered Professional Engineer with a BSEE degree from Pennsylvania State University. His goal is to reinvent the electric power grid in a manner that maximizes the production and utilization of renewable energy.

Privacy Policy

Cancellation Policy

To cancel, log into your student portal, go to "Enrollment History," and select "Request Drop" next to the course. Refund eligibility depends on notice, course type, and fee:

  • 30+ days prior to start of course: Full refund.
  • 15-29 days prior to start of course: Refund minus a 25% administrative fee.
  • Less than 15 days prior to start of course: No refund.

Exceptions (No Refunds):

  • Osher Educational Travel/Go Explore and College for Kids & Teens courses.
  • Courses with a fee of $35 or less.
  • On-demand online courses after the student has accessed the learning environment.
  • Conferences/Special Events (specific policy will be in registration terms).
  • Special requests and non-course fee items (e.g., memberships, textbooks) are non-refundable.

If the School of Continuing Education cancels a course, a full refund will be issued.


Invoicing Policy

  • If "invoice full amount" is selected, payment is due 14 days before the course start.
  • Failure to pay by the due date may result in cancellation of your registration.
  • For Agency payments (AmeriCorps, DVR, MyCAA, etc.), contact sceinfo@uwm.edu for next steps.
  • Automated payment reminders will be sent until the balance is paid.

Third Party Expenses

The School of Continuing Education does not provide refunds for any expenses (such as travel, accommodations, or materials) incurred by students due to a course cancellation or a student's self-cancellation. We strongly recommend booking refundable/transferable travel and accommodations, and purchasing materials with a return window extending beyond the course start date.


Collections Policy

Participants who fail to make timely payments agree to pay all collection costs incurred by UWM (agency fees, legal fees, etc.) and any late fees. UWM may also certify the past-due balance to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and claim the total due against any refunds or payments owed to the participant.


Photography and Media Usage

The School of Continuing Education may take photographs, video, and other media during courses and events for educational, promotional, and advertising purposes. Virtual programs may be recorded for marketing and content sharing.

No firearms or weapons are allowed on UWM property.
