Course Description

In this series of Microsoft Project master classes, you learn to integrate project documents, create schedules, record estimates, schedule activities and tasks, assign resources to an activity or task, track performance to date and reconcile the schedule to changes.

The series also counts as one course toward your UWM Project Management Certificate.

The series is offered live online using Zoom. A computer with Microsoft Project software is needed.

Course Outline/Topics

Introduction to MS Project

Get started using MS Project by understanding how MS Project works, its capabilities and the differences in each version of the software.

  • Understand the MS Project interface (including differences between the standard, professional and online editions)
  • Level the playing field: Setting the scheduling standards
  • Leverage work, units and duration (how they really work)
  • Understand the advantages and disadvantages of the version that you have

Working With Calendars

Understanding calendars is key to using MS Project well. You learn options for calendars, how to create and assign them and their impact on the schedule.

  • Understand how the calendars impact the schedule
  • Understand the impact of the default calendar options
  • Create and assign base/organizational calendars
  • Create and manage project calendars
  • Create and manage resource calendars
  • Understand where to use task calendars and the impact on the schedule

Setting Up the Resources

All projects require resources. MS Project can help you plan and leverage your resources when you know how to set project priorities and standards, and assign work, duration and units.

  • Use the resource sheet, deciding what information is important to know about project resources
  • Set the resource standards (work/material/cost resources)

Work Breakdown Structures and Estimating

By creating and maintaining a work breakdown structure, you will be able to leverage the estimating capabilities of MS Project and customize fields to meet your needs.

Cancellation Policy

To cancel, log into your student portal, go to "Enrollment History," and select "Request Drop" next to the course. Refund eligibility depends on notice, course type, and fee:

  • 30+ days prior to start of course: Full refund.
  • 15-29 days prior to start of course: Refund minus a 25% administrative fee.
  • Less than 15 days prior to start of course: No refund.

Exceptions (No Refunds):

  • Osher Educational Travel/Go Explore and College for Kids & Teens courses.
  • Courses with a fee of $35 or less.
  • On-demand online courses after the student has accessed the learning environment.
  • Conferences/Special Events (specific policy will be in registration terms).
  • Special requests and non-course fee items (e.g., memberships, textbooks) are non-refundable.

If the School of Continuing Education cancels a course, a full refund will be issued.


Invoicing Policy

  • If "invoice full amount" is selected, payment is due 14 days before the course start.
  • Failure to pay by the due date may result in cancellation of your registration.
  • For Agency payments (AmeriCorps, DVR, MyCAA, etc.), contact sceinfo@uwm.edu for next steps.
  • Automated payment reminders will be sent until the balance is paid.

Third Party Expenses

The School of Continuing Education does not provide refunds for any expenses (such as travel, accommodations, or materials) incurred by students due to a course cancellation or a student's self-cancellation. We strongly recommend booking refundable/transferable travel and accommodations, and purchasing materials with a return window extending beyond the course start date.


Collections Policy

Participants who fail to make timely payments agree to pay all collection costs incurred by UWM (agency fees, legal fees, etc.) and any late fees. UWM may also certify the past-due balance to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and claim the total due against any refunds or payments owed to the participant.


Photography and Media Usage

The School of Continuing Education may take photographs, video, and other media during courses and events for educational, promotional, and advertising purposes. Virtual programs may be recorded for marketing and content sharing.


Conduct Information and Disciplinary Measures

No firearms or weapons are allowed on UWM property.

Participant conduct policies are based on the following UW System Administrative Codes, which may result in probation, suspension, or dismissal from all UWM functions:

  • UWS Chapter 14 – Student Academic Disciplinary Procedures
  • UWS Chapter 17 – Student Nonacademic Disciplinary Procedures
  • UWS Chapter 18 – Conduct on University Lands
