Course Description

This two-day course is designed to help rubber professionals such as rubber chemists, engineers, compounders, laboratory and production managers and associates better understand the various methods available to measure rubber processing, dynamic properties and the fundamental rheological principles on which these tests are based. Explore how specific changes in rubber compound formulations affect these measured processing properties as well as the cured dynamic properties. Learn the characterization of raw elastomers. The topics of Mooney viscosity (MV) and Mooney stress relaxation (MSR), the oscillating disk rheometer (ODR), and the moving die rheometer (MDR) are presented.

This course focuses extensively on the current use of the Rubber Process Analyzer (RPA) through nine different ASTM Standards to characterize raw rubber, predict downstream processability for mixed stocks, and measure curing characteristics and after-cure dynamic properties. The use of the capillary rheometer in measuring rubber compounding processability is also reviewed. You are encouraged to bring and discuss your unique processing problems.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to select and perform rubber testing from a wide variety of various rubber processability test instruments that are commonly used under various ASTM and ISO standards (or be able to self-modify these methods) for the user’s advantage.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate how to select specific rubber tests from a wide variety of options
  • Estimate the best rubber test conditions for a better, more sensitive test
  • Interpret test results more effectively in order to improve rubber processing quality and productivity

John has authored more than 80 journal and magazine publications, including four books on rubber technology. He has consulted, presented technical papers or given seminars in more than 38 countries. Some of John’s publications have been translated into eight languages. He received the Monsanto Master Technical Service Award, the ACS Rubber Division “Best Paper Award,” and the University of Akron and University of Wisconsin Appreciation Awards for teaching rubber compounding and testing courses in their continuing education programs. He is a fellow in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and received the Award of Merit in 1990 and the Distinguished Service Award in 2005.

He has also represented the United States as a delegate to the International Standards Organization (ISO) for the last 30 years, and was appointed in 1992 to be Leader of the U.S.A. Delegation to ISO TC-45 on Rubber.

John teaches ten rubber technology courses in the University of Akron and the University of Wisconsin continuing education departments. He is a member of the American Chemical Society, Society of Rheology, and ASQ with a CQE and CQA. He is also a representative to the RMA, and has Recognition in Who’s Who in America.

CEUs

The continuing education unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized means to document participation in organized non-credit continuing education. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in organized continuing education under qualified instruction. The CEU provides a vehicle for employers, professional groups, and licensing agencies to account for participation in non-credit seminars, workshops, and courses.
