Patrice Burns, M.A.

Patrice Burns is passionate about language and student learning and thoroughly enjoys teaching Spanish in the online program. She has over 25 years of experience teaching at the university level and loves witnessing students develop their communication and language skills.

Patrice lives and works in Madrid, Spain and likes to share cultural insights, common expressions and the unique events and everyday happenings of Madrid with her students. She loves traveling, learning about other cultures and experiencing new cuisines.

Prior to moving to Madrid, Patrice worked as the Program Manager of the Language Department at UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education. She holds an MA in Spanish from Marquette University and a BA in Spanish and Communications from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Engrith Rivera

Engrith Rivera was born and raised in Puerto Rico. Graduated from the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras Campus with a major in Teaching English to Spanish Speakers and a minor in English Literature. Completed her master’s at Concordia University with a major in School Administration and Curriculum and Instruction.

 

Mrs. Rivera has worked as a middle and high school teacher for 10+ years. Taught in Puerto Rico and then in 2015, she moved to Milwaukee to teach. She has taught and supported the ESL and bilingual programs at the high schools, been a robotics coach, instructional coach/school support teacher and Director of the Career Program called NAF (National Academy Foundation)

 

Now, she is part of the Milwaukee AHEC team to work closely with leadership and the departmental team to aid in the efficient rollout, coordination, and evaluation of one of their programs and their Spanish initiative. She is excited to use her native language (Spanish) and curriculum background within her role.

Karen Woelfle-Potter, MBA

Karen’s professional passion is to help people expand and apply their knowledge and achieve their learning goals. Drawing upon her years of experience as an international business and learning consultant, Karen now teaches Spanish in the Languages Programs at UWM-SCE. Her former corporate clients described her as insightful, inspiring, expert and passionate to help them achieve their objectives. Karen brings that same excellence and commitment to her Spanish teaching, combining her dual passions for Spanish and facilitating adult learning.

Karen has lived in Mexico, and worked and traveled there and in South America, as well as in the U.S., Europe and Asia. She creates a collaborative, lively and productive learning experience, engaging participants to learn, share and practice their new skills. People who study Spanish with Karen are extremely positive about the experience. Their feedback and continuing study in our Spanish programs affirm the value and commitment Karen delivers in her work with her students.

Karen has an undergraduate business degree from UW-LaCrosse and earned her MBA. from Marquette University. She’s certified in creative problem solving and organization culture assessment by Creative Problem Solving Group in Buffalo. She is certified in performance coaching by InsideOut Development in Utah. Synchronous instruction delivered virtually, requiring students to participate at specific dates and times. This can involve an entirely online group or students joining a live, in-person class remotely.

CEUs

The continuing education unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized means to document participation in organized non-credit continuing education. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in organized continuing education under qualified instruction. The CEU provides a vehicle for employers, professional groups, and licensing agencies to account for participation in non-credit seminars, workshops, and courses.

Alaina Brandt

Currently based in Mexico City, Alaina Brandt holds a Master of Arts in Language, Literature, and Translation from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Spanish and English Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, as well as studying abroad at the Universidad de Valladolid, Spain.

With over eight years of experience in adult education, Brandt has taught English and job skills to immigrants in Eau Claire, WI, and served as a professor and consultant at institutions such as the Monterey Institute and UW-Milwaukee. As the Membership Secretary of ASTM F43 on Language Services and Products, she contributes to international standards in language education.

Alaina excels in teaching live online, hybrid and traditional courses, integrating reflective learning, defining key terminology and incorporating practical activities to create inclusive learning environments that prioritize accessibility in her teaching.

Privacy Policy

Cancellation Policy

To cancel, log into your student portal, go to "Enrollment History," and select "Request Drop" next to the course. Refund eligibility depends on notice, course type, and fee:

  • 30+ days prior to start of course: Full refund.
  • 15-29 days prior to start of course: Refund minus a 25% administrative fee.
  • Less than 15 days prior to start of course: No refund.

Exceptions (No Refunds):

  • Osher Educational Travel/Go Explore and College for Kids & Teens courses.
  • Courses with a fee of $35 or less.
  • On-demand online courses after the student has accessed the learning environment.
  • Conferences/Special Events (specific policy will be in registration terms).
  • Special requests and non-course fee items (e.g., memberships, textbooks) are non-refundable.

If the School of Continuing Education cancels a course, a full refund will be issued.

Invoicing Policy

  • If "invoice full amount" is selected, payment is due 14 days before the course start.
  • Failure to pay by the due date may result in cancellation of your registration.
  • For Agency payments (AmeriCorps, DVR, MyCAA, etc.), contact sceinfo@uwm.edu for next steps.
  • Automated payment reminders will be sent until the balance is paid.

Third Party Expenses

The School of Continuing Education does not provide refunds for any expenses (such as travel, accommodations, or materials) incurred by students due to a course cancellation or a student's self-cancellation. We strongly recommend booking refundable/transferable travel and accommodations, and purchasing materials with a return window extending beyond the course start date.

Collections Policy

Participants who fail to make timely payments agree to pay all collection costs incurred by UWM (agency fees, legal fees, etc.) and any late fees. UWM may also certify the past-due balance to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and claim the total due against any refunds or payments owed to the participant.

Photography and Media Usage

The School of Continuing Education may take photographs, video, and other media during courses and events for educational, promotional, and advertising purposes. Virtual programs may be recorded for marketing and content sharing.

Conduct Information and Disciplinary Measures

No firearms or weapons are allowed on UWM property.

Participant conduct policies are based on the following UW System Administrative Codes, which may result in probation, suspension, or dismissal from all UWM functions:

  • UWS Chapter 14 – Student Academic Disciplinary Procedures
  • UWS Chapter 17 – Student Nonacademic Disciplinary Procedures
