Course Description

Learn the “Universal Language of Culture” and a preferred tongue for devotees of the cinema, drama, music and haute cuisine. Gain basic conversational skills and essential grammar. This course is for those who have taken French I or have previous French language experience.

Our French courses are currently offered asynchronously on-demand.

On-demand online: Customize your course duration (six to 16 weeks) and access Vista Higher Learning’s SupersitePlus for audio, video, activities, tutorials, assessments and pronunciation guides. Record your voice, listen to native speakers, complete homework and learn French at your own pace with this instructor guided course. This instructor-guided course is designed with flexibility in mind, making it ideal for learners with busy or unpredictable schedules, no live sessions required.

  • Recognize and accurately pronounce French oral, nasal and open/closed vowel sounds through structured listening and speaking activities

  • Interpret and construct questions using interrogative words, intonation and contextual clues in oral and written exchanges

  • Analyze and compare cultural practices and figures from various Francophone regions, including North Africa, the Antilles and West Africa

  • Demonstrate understanding of grammatical structures such as partitive articles, demonstrative adjectives, object pronouns and irregular verbs in meaningful contexts

Tamara DuPage

Tamara began teaching in 1999 and has taught a variety of Spanish courses for all levels of proficiency. She strives to create a fun, engaging learning environment that allows students to quickly acquire language skills through interactive communication, music, culture and hands-on practice.

Tamara holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Spanish from Western Illinois University and a Master’s Degree in Foreign Language and Literature with a graduate certificate in Spanish>English translation from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is a licensed Spanish educator (K-12) through the WI Department of Public Instruction.

This class is fully online and doesn't have fixed meeting times. You can access the lessons, lectures, and assignments at any time that works for your schedule. (Some sections may have modules/assignments with deadlines)

On-Demand Online

Description
Asynchronous instruction where students access materials, complete assignments, and participate in learning activities at their own pace and schedule. There are no mandatory live meeting times. Students have continuous 24/7 access.

CEUs

The continuing education unit (CEU) is a nationally recognized means to document participation in organized non-credit continuing education. One CEU is defined as 10 contact hours of participation in organized continuing education under qualified instruction. The CEU provides a vehicle for employers, professional groups, and licensing agencies to account for participation in non-credit seminars, workshops, and courses.

Privacy Policy

Cancellation Policy

To cancel, log into your student portal, go to "Enrollment History," and select "Request Drop" next to the course. Refund eligibility depends on notice, course type, and fee:

  • 30+ days prior to start of course: Full refund.
  • 15-29 days prior to start of course: Refund minus a 25% administrative fee.
  • Less than 15 days prior to start of course: No refund.

Exceptions (No Refunds):

  • Osher Educational Travel/Go Explore and College for Kids & Teens courses.
  • Courses with a fee of $35 or less.
  • On-demand online courses after the student has accessed the learning environment.
  • Conferences/Special Events (specific policy will be in registration terms).
  • Special requests and non-course fee items (e.g., memberships, textbooks) are non-refundable.

If the School of Continuing Education cancels a course, a full refund will be issued.

Invoicing Policy

  • If "invoice full amount" is selected, payment is due 14 days before the course start.
  • Failure to pay by the due date may result in cancellation of your registration.
  • For Agency payments (AmeriCorps, DVR, MyCAA, etc.), contact sceinfo@uwm.edu for next steps.
  • Automated payment reminders will be sent until the balance is paid.

Third Party Expenses

The School of Continuing Education does not provide refunds for any expenses (such as travel, accommodations, or materials) incurred by students due to a course cancellation or a student's self-cancellation. We strongly recommend booking refundable/transferable travel and accommodations, and purchasing materials with a return window extending beyond the course start date.

Collections Policy

Participants who fail to make timely payments agree to pay all collection costs incurred by UWM (agency fees, legal fees, etc.) and any late fees. UWM may also certify the past-due balance to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and claim the total due against any refunds or payments owed to the participant.

Photography and Media Usage

The School of Continuing Education may take photographs, video, and other media during courses and events for educational, promotional, and advertising purposes. Virtual programs may be recorded for marketing and content sharing.

Conduct Information and Disciplinary Measures

No firearms or weapons are allowed on UWM property.

Participant conduct policies are based on the following UW System Administrative Codes, which may result in probation, suspension, or dismissal from all UWM functions:
