Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is essential for translating design intent into functional, manufacturable and inspectable products. As manufacturing systems become more complex and precision requirements continue to increase, engineers with advanced GD&T knowledge are better equipped to improve product quality, reduce production challenges and communicate effectively across design, manufacturing and quality teams.
The Functional Dimensioning & Tolerancing Microcredential builds expertise in applying GD&T principles to real-world engineering and manufacturing challenges. Beginning with foundational dimensioning and tolerancing concepts and progressing to advanced GD&T applications, the program is centered on datum selection, functional tolerancing, manufacturability, inspection and assembly analysis. Through practical, industry-focused coursework, you’ll also learn how to apply ASME Y14.5 and Y14.43 standards to support manufacturability, quality assurance and efficient product development.
Learning Outcomes
- Interpret ASME Y14.5 and Y14.43 standards to apply GD&T principles to engineering drawings, components and assemblies
- Apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing methods to develop functional part designs, gages and fixtures that support manufacturability and inspection
- Analyze geometric tolerances, tolerance stack-ups and measurement data to evaluate part functionality and compliance with design requirements
- Evaluate inspection methods and gaging strategies to determine their effectiveness in verifying product quality and design intent
- Design GD&T solutions that optimize tolerancing approaches, improve manufacturing efficiency and support reliable product performance
