Gears are at the heart of most manufactured devices, from basic machines to advanced equipment. Understanding the fundamentals of gear technology is essential for engineers to be able to manipulate power, speed and torque, ultimately preventing failures and optimizing performance of gear systems.
The Gear Technology Essentials Microcredential dives into application and design aspects of gears to provide a comprehensive understanding of one of the oldest and most common machine parts.
Learning Outcomes
- Differentiate between common gear types, gear arrangements and their appropriate applications
- Interpret gear tooth action and apply fundamental gear geometry and design parameters
- Analyze key gear design factors to evaluate performance
- Apply modern gear design, analysis and manufacturing principles to develop practical engineering solutions
- Create accurate engineering drawings that effectively communicate gear designs
